  • Welcome To Project Cuba 2010!

A Cuban Dance, Music & Culture Celebration!

    Location:

11:00-12:30 Morning Workshops will be held simultaneously in two separate rooms.

Wemilere: Dance of all the Orishas with Yesenia
Must be experienced with Orishas dance and music
This special workshop will help experienced students understand the similarities and differences in the dances of the different Orishas, as well as the expressions and portrayal of each Orisha as an individual. At the end of the workshop, we will have our own sample Wemilere where each Orisha dances and shows his or her characteristics.

Historical Overview of Cuban Dance, Music and Culture with Anara
No experience required. You will mostly be seated; minimal dance/movement.
This lecture presentation was created over many years of listening to the questions of people traveling to Cuba, watching Cuban performances or taking Cuban dance classes. It's purpose is to fill in the gaps of comprehension that many people feel when entering the complex world of Cuban Dance, Music & Culture. Our goal is also to give participants a historical context and a richer understanding of what the dances represent, and how they've evolved over time.

    12:30-2:00 Lunch Break

During this break, Anara will hold the “Cuba Researchers Travel Info Session” in a nearby cafe.
Other participants can eat lunch with Yesenia or on their own.

    2:00-5:00 Afternoon classes

The purpose of each of the afternoon workshops is for you to feel comfortable in social dance settings in Cuba, like at a night club or a rumba. It is also our goal to help you understand the history and meanings behind the moves. Beginners (who may be experienced dancers in another style) will learn some easy tricks to transfer their other dance skills into these Cuban styles, so they can appear “experienced” when they arrive in Cuba. Those who are already experienced in these Cuban styles will take their dancing to a higher level, learning new moves and improving their technique.

    2:00-3:30 Rumba

    Beginners: Anara
    Experienced: Yesenia

    3:30-5:00 Rueda de Casino

    Experienced: Anara
